painting in progress

This is the painting that I am currently working on. She started off as the blue lady but has evolved. Soon I will be posting how she looks now. She is very inspired by my painting She Dances. There is already orange in the hair and soon there will be yellows.

La Cueva

La Cueva
acrylic,crayon on canvas
La Cueva means The Cave. This painting has many layers.  It is very special to me because of the theme and the length of time that it took to be complete.  The theme here is optimism. She is in a cave looking out into the light.  Inside the cave there are many colors and layers.  It can get dark sometimes, but all she needs to do is look toward the light. Life is like that. Inside each of us there is beauty and also ugliness.  Looking beyond ourselves we capture light and goodness that we then bring inside.  It is up to each individual to search for the positive within and without. There are also butterflies fluttering about.  The butterfly is a symbol of change, of metamorphosis, of rebirth. Every moment is an opportunity to change for the better. This is probably the painting that took me the longest to finish. I paint rather quickly, but with this creation I kept adding to it and putting it aside for years.

She Dances

She Dances
acrylic on canvas
This painting is all about joy. She dances. Colors envelope her and she twirls. Yet she is at peace. Serenity in the midst of movement. Serenity in the midst of chaos? Am I writing about my painting or about my life?

The Song

The Song
acrylic on canvas
I begin this blogging experience by writing about The Song.  The song is a painting I created in 2006.  She is one of several in my Ladies series. While painting these ladies I experience a magical moment when a lady appears. Usually these paintings begin with lines and colors. I always feel that first stage in creating a painting is just getting started, be it with a preconceived idea or with spontaneous paint strokes. At first for me it's about getting lines, colors, and shapes on the canvas. I will leave a shape that I think will become a face. In the second stage, the face usually emerges and I start adding more layers of colors. The third stage is all about adding details.  Many of my works have orbs of different sizes.  I am very attracted to the orb, circle, sphere, all these round shapes call to me. This particular painting speaks to me of sound.  The movement of the lines symbolize the rhythm of a song. She is enraptured by the music as she feels the notes move around her. She is serene in the midst of the musical movement. The oranges and reds around her show warmth, they are blocking out the coldness.  This is what music and art do to the soul. They bring life and warmth.
Welcome to my blog. My purpose here is to write about my art, my creative process, about art themes and aesthetics.  I want to share what I create with others as well as discuss the before mentioned topics. I have always enjoyed reading about the thought process behind the creation of art. I love finding out more about the artists that have created some of my favorite art works.  I'll be posting photos of my completed paintings and drawings as well as photos of works I am currently working on. as I get started in this I feel as if I am entering into the unknown. This world of the internet is to me a virtual sea and I am diving in!!!
